the hotel

The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is located on an old andesite rock quarry (abandoned since the 1950’s) some 50 km away from the city center. The hotel opened in November 2018 after more than 10 years in the making and a total investment north of $555 million, poised to be one of the flagship IHG Hotels properties in greater China.

The hotel offers 338 rooms and suites on a visually spectacular 18-story structure built along the cliff of the old open-air quarry. JADE+QA Architects, studio responsible for the resort design, used the 88-meter cliff to create, literally, an underground hotel. 16 of the 18 floors of the building are below ground, 2 of those actually under water, with some 10 meters of the building submerged under the artificial lake created at the bottom of the quarry.

the suite

80 sq metres suite including 1 king bed room and 1 living room enjoy the waterfall view. Enjoy Club InterContinental exclusive privileges and butler service. Baidu ai solution, 55-inch Smart TV, jbl, Nespresso coffee machine are available. Bathroom with ferragamo amenities, dyson hair dryer.

And the waterfall laser show!

conclusion

This property is quite spectacular. The designers involved did a great job both on the building design and integration into the landscape as well as in the sleek interiors. The drawback of this property: it’s more than one hour away from the city center, a bit in the middle of nowhere.

Prices on this property have come down post-pandemic (no surprise!). For next month the waterfall suite sells for about $1,500/¥10,000++ per night , while their standard rooms sell for about $380/¥2,100++/52,000 points (deluxe room) to $440/¥3,000++ (club room) per night. There are no junior suites, which probably explains the price difference. Notice that none of the suites at this property are included on the InterContinental Ambassador specialty suites exemption list, which means an Ambassador member should get an upgrade to a suite by booking a club room, and a Royal Ambassador member should get it by booking a deluxe room.
